For many years, fascia was thought to be little more than the body's packing material… a layer of connective tissue that simply held everything together. Research over the past two decades has dramatically changed that understanding.
Fascia is a continuous, living network of connective tissue that surrounds and connects every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, and organ throughout the body. Rather than existing in isolated pieces, it forms an interconnected system that helps distribute force, support movement, and provide structural organization from head to toe.
It's also richly supplied with sensory nerve endings, making it one of the body's largest sensory organs, playing a key role in proprioception (our awareness of where the body is in space) and communication between different body systems.
Because fascia connects the entire body, tension in one area can genuinely influence another, sometimes in surprising ways. Anatomical studies have traced continuous fascial lines running from the sole of the foot all the way to the jaw and tongue; pulling on one end can create movement at the other. This is part of why Craniosacral Fascial Therapy works with the body as an interconnected whole rather than focusing on a single area of discomfort.

One of the most common questions people ask is, "How can such a light touch make a difference?"
The answer lies in how the body receives information.
Fascia is richly supplied with sensory receptors that continuously send information to the brain about movement, pressure, tension, and position. These receptors don't necessarily require deep pressure to respond, different types respond to different kinds of touch, and many are designed to detect slow, sustained changes rather than force.
Rather than trying to manipulate or "fix" the body, CFT uses gentle, sustained touch to gather information from the body's tissues and support the nervous system's natural ability to adapt and reorganize. The goal isn't to force change, but to create the conditions in which change can occur.

Your nervous system is constantly gathering information about the world around you and deciding how your body should respond. Every moment, it asks one essential question:
"Am I safe?"
When the answer is yes, the body is free to rest, digest, recover, learn, connect, and repair. When the nervous system perceives stress, injury, illness, or uncertainty, it naturally shifts toward protection. Muscles may tighten, breathing may become shallow, movement can feel restricted, and the body may prioritize survival over restoration.
These protective responses aren't problems to eliminate, they're intelligent adaptations designed to keep us safe. But sometimes those patterns continue long after the original stressor has passed, and the body stays organized around tension it no longer needs.
CFT works with both the fascial and craniosacral systems to support nervous system regulation. Rather than forcing the body to relax, the goal is to provide gentle sensory input that encourages the nervous system to shift toward greater safety, adaptability, and ease.
As the nervous system becomes more regulated, many people notice improvements that extend beyond the area of discomfort that first brought them in. While every experience is unique, changes in movement, sleep, breathing, comfort, and overall well-being often reflect the body's remarkable capacity to reorganize when it feels supported.

Research into CFT and other gentle manual therapies is still evolving. Existing studies suggest these approaches may help reduce pain, improve function, support relaxation, and enhance quality of life for some individuals. Like many hands-on therapies, research in this area remains challenging. Every practitioner, every client, and every session is unique, which makes large, standardized studies difficult to design.
As research continues to grow, one principle remains unchanged for me: every body is different. Rather than chasing a protocol, I focus on listening to what each person's body is communicating and providing care that's thoughtful, individualized, and responsive.
